A student society devoted to the art of oratory, the study of literature, and the practice of civil, rigorous debate — carried on in the tradition of open inquiry and good argument, week after week.
The Society takes its name from Edmund Burke, the eighteenth-century statesman and orator prized for the force and clarity of his arguments. In that spirit, we bring together students who want to think carefully, speak persuasively, and disagree well. Our members come from every corner of the University, united by a shared interest in ideas and the discipline of defending them aloud.
Each meeting features a structured debate on a proposed resolution — drawn from history, politics, philosophy, or current affairs — argued by two teams before the full membership.
Members present original essays, readings, and remarks on literature and ideas, giving newer speakers a lower-stakes way to develop their voice before the Society.
Beyond the podium, the Society is a community — a standing invitation to good conversation, old traditions, and lasting friendships built on shared argument.
“Society is indeed a contract... a partnership not only between those who are living, but between those who are living, those who are dead, and those who are to be born.”
Edmund BurkeNew members are welcome at any meeting — no debate experience required. Come once as a guest, and if you'd like to join, speak to an officer afterward or reach out using the details below.
